The Zoo Comes to You: Virtual Field Trips Texas Edition

Today we are highlighting 3 Texas zoos that have provided online fun and field trips for when you aren’t able to visit.

Great Field Trips & Activities for These Topics:

  • Zoology
  • Habitats
  • Ecosystems

There are many impressive zoos in Texas, but for now, we are looking at the best for “at home” content. The Abilene, Dallas, and Houston Zoos have all done a great job of putting together some awesome resources for people to enjoy from their sofa. We hope you will be able to visit these zoos in person soon, but until then check out their virtual field trips and online activities here:

What Can You Expect to See & Do?

The Abilene Zoo has a Zoo EDventures video series younger kids will enjoy, but the feature that we think is a truly clever idea is their interactive “Ask a Question” button. Kids can submit questions via video or email and get them answered by a zookeeper though fun video clips filmed at the zoo. Questions such as, “Where does all the poop go?” and “How old is the alligator?”

The Dallas Zoo, along with the Children’s Aquarium at Fair Park, have put together an awesome collection of videos, downloadable activity packs, and several other creative ideas to keep kids learning at home. Check out their Bring the Zoo to You page and make your own beehive, or learn to draw a toucan!

The Houston Zoo is going live on Facebook every weekday at 11 a.m. from a different part of the zoo. They will be showing off some amazing animals and answering questions from viewers. Past videos are cataloged on their Bringing the Zoo to You page. Each video has a corresponding game and/or activity to do at home, as well as a related article from their Good News Blog Series. For example, you might watch a video about flamingos, then make a flamingo hand puppet, then read about how you can protect birds in your own backyard!

Tips

You might check out the Abilene Zoo’s adopt an animal page. They have cute packages available that will get kids excited about wildlife conservation. The ZooCrew pack is meant to fund a new Madagascar exhibit. So, when you visit the Abilene Zoo in the future, your child will be able to find their name on the exhibit signage.
