Some say Ft Worth (also known as Cowtown) is where the west begins. They have held on to their cowboy culture well. These 3 stops will keep your kids entertained as they mosey through the day and into the sunset.
1. The Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District
The Stockyards has so much to see and do, but the number one can’t miss is the Fort Worth Herd Cattle Drive. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped back into a bygone time as the cowboys and longhorns take their stroll down the cobblestones of Exchange Avenue. Cattle drives take place twice daily at 11:30am and 4:00pm.
Other sites to consider while you are in the Stockyards District include:
- The Stockyards Museum (Inside the Historic Livestock Exchange Building)
- Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame (Jersey Lilly Old Time Photo Parlor is located here)
- The Stockyards Petting Zoo
- The Cowtown Cattle Pen Maze
- Cowtown Coliseum (See a Show or See the Building)
- The Stockyard Stables Horseback Riding
- The Grapevine Vintage Railroad
- The Stockyards Station (For Shopping & Dining)
- Billy Bob’s Texas
- Tours are Available (Even Ghost Tours)
2. National Cowgirl Museum
Stroll on over to the Cultural District for stops 2 and 3. You wouldn’t expect the National Cowgirl Museum to be so hi-tech, but that is exactly what you’ll find here. The impressive exhibits tell the stories of cowgirls past and present. You can also ride a (kid-friendly) mechanical bull and get the whole thing on downloadable video.
3. The Cattle Raisers Museum
Here is where you will learn the story of the longhorns you visited at the Stockyards. The Cattle Raisers Museum is about the science and history of the cattle industry. It is located on the 2nd floor of the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History. You’ll want to save some time for the rest of the museum. There are plenty of exciting hands-on activities for your field tripper to enjoy.
