Summer Reading
Leisurely summer reading can provide many benefits for both children and adults. Not only can it be an excellent way to relax and unwind, but it can also improve cognitive abilities and creativity. Whether you enjoy adventure, mystery, romance, or science fiction, there’s something out there for everyone. Here are six ideas to get your family started on some summer reading fun:
1. Join a summer reading challenge.
This rewarding activity can take many forms. You can set a goal or complete a series of book-related activities. Reading challenges can include simple reading logs and trackers, game cards, or scavenger hunts. Many libraries offer summer reading programs with fun prizes for participants.

2. Participate in a book club.
Starting or joining a summer book club is the perfect way to socialize and enjoy a story together. You and your friends or family members can take turns making book selections or agree on books that are interesting to everyone. Then, meet up to discuss the books you’ve read and share your thoughts and opinions.

3. Create a reading nook.
Set up a reading nook in your home or backyard. A cozy corner with comfortable seating, good lighting, and minimal distractions is a great place to read. Kids may enjoy reading in a blanket fort or tent. Make sure everything you need is within reach, such as a drink or a snack. A picnic blanket under a tree is also a peaceful place to read during the summer. Take your book outside and enjoy the fresh air while reading. You can read in the park, at the beach, or in your backyard.
4. Bring books to life by immersing yourself in the story.
Immerse yourself in the setting of the book by trying an activity or food mentioned in the book or altering your environment. For example, if you’re reading The Secret Garden together, you could bake cottage bread served with jam, plant flowers mentioned in the book, and visit a botanical garden. Any activity to complement the book will make it more memorable.
5. Have a book-to-screen movie party.
Reading a book together and then watching the film adaptation is a great way to encourage literacy in a reluctant reader since there is a built-in reward at the end of the book. During a movie party, guests typically watch a movie while enjoying snacks and drinks. Add to the festivities by including movie props such as teacups for an Alice in Wonderland party or wearing one fancy shoe to a Cinderella party.
6. Enjoy books on the go.
Make it a fun outing to take trips to the library or bookstore. Let kids choose books that interest them. Incorporate reading into day trips and family vacations. Encourage kids to read about the places you’re visiting. Audiobooks are great for in the car.
