Roadside Stop: Storybook Adventure Trail in Abilene, TX

Abilene is the Storybook Capital of America, and it’s there that you’ll find the most extensive public collection of storybook sculptures in the United States! And the number keeps increasing. Each year, at the Children’s Art & Literacy Festival, a new piece is added to the collection.

The Abilene Cultural Affairs Council has included four fun ways to explore the sculptures and downtown:

  1. Download the GooseChase app for the Storybook Sculpture Scavenger Hunt. When you complete the game, you can collect a button at the T & P Depot (8:30-5:00, M-F.)
  2. Download an audio tour to hear a two-minute excerpt from the book associated with each sculpture.
  3. Stop by the benches and make an embossing (rubbing) of illustrations.
  4. Pick up a Seymour Passport (at the Abilene Zoo, Abilene Public Library, Center for Contemporary Arts, Frontier Texas!, The Grace Museum, or the National Center for Children’s Literature) for a scavenger hunt inside the scavenger hunt. You will try to find six Seymours hidden around downtown and at the zoo gift shop. Collect all the stamps on your passport and earn a sticker.
For more information, please check out Abilene’s visitor information here.

Happy hunting!
