The temperature is rising, and all the gorgeous flowers are beginning to bloom. Many botanical gardens are perfect for exploring with kids. Take some pictures and make a fun day of it.
2. Attend a Festival
Several towns and cities in Texas host spring festivals with live music, food, games, shopping, and other entertainment. The Ennis Bluebonnet Trail and Festival is a popular option, named after and featuring the state flower. Here are some others to check out:
3. Plant a Garden
Gardening is a great way to teach kids about nature and responsibility. Have them help you choose the plants and seeds, and then work together to plant and care for them. Growing your own food or flowers is a rewarding experience.
4. Create or Prepare a Recipe Together Using Seasonal Produce
A great place to look for ingredients is at your local farmer’s market. Eating what grows locally and seasonally is not only fresher and more nutritious, but it also tastes better and supports local farmers.
5. Have a Park Day
Head to a city or state park. Pack a picnic, fly a kite, or bring lawn games to play. Go on a hike or nature walk and see how many birds or wildflowers you can find. Texas has many state parks with a variety of activities and programs to enjoy with your family.
6. Get Creative with Springtime Crafts
Press flowers, paint eggs, or build a fairy garden. Backyard birds will appreciate a homemade house or feeder and a toad abode might attract a cute new resident to your home.
7. Get a Fresh Start with Spring Cleaning
Time to open the windows and let some fresh air in. Get the kids involved in spring cleaning by having them help with tasks such as organizing their toys or donating clothes they’ve outgrown. Sunshine and a clean home are sure to lift your mood.
8. Visit a Butterfly House or Garden
Visiting a butterfly conservatory is a magical experience. It’s a chance to see many different species up close and personal. These habitats are often full of beautiful plants and colorful blooming flowers for both you and the butterflies to enjoy.
9. Visit a Local Farm
Spring is the season of new life and it’s the perfect time of year to see baby animals or gather your own flower bouquet. Many “Pick Your Own” farms begin opening back up this time of year with flowers and produce to harvest. Honey farms and historical farms also make for great springtime destinations.
10. Relax with a Springtime Storytime
Read books about spring with your kids. Activity books are great as well. Take a blanket outside and find an inviting place to read in nature. Make nature-inspired bookmarks or start a nature journal. The possibilities are endless.
