Explore a Fort from When Texas Was Part of Spain

Roadside Stop: Presidio de San Saba (The Fort of San Saba) in Menard, Texas

Presidios were constructed during Spanish colonial times to provide protection for nearby missions. This one, however, was left standing after its neighboring mission was burnt to the ground.

During its active time, it also served to protect the civilians and miners working in the area. At one point approximately 300 Spaniards lived in the fort and mission.

Visit this site to learn more about the history of Presidio de San Saba. Walk the grounds and imagine the bustle of what life would have been like for the people living there; soldiers patrolling, food cooking, farmers working, the blacksmith hammering, and children playing.
