Roadside Stop: College Ruins in Salado, Texas
See the remains and read the ill-fated story as you explore the ruins of a college built during the founding of Salado, Texas.
Created with ideas ahead of its time, Salado College was established in 1859 with the belief that both men and women deserve access to higher education. When it opened, the school served students from elementary grades through college.
It later became a high school (1890,) and here is where things get sketchy.
In 1901 it burned, was rebuilt, and then burned again. Arson is suspected but never proven. It closed in 1918. In 1919 it reopened as a public school but burned again in 1924.
Today the college remains in ruins in a pretty park setting off of main street. Visitors can stroll the grounds as they read its story.
It is important to note that Salado College Park is just one stop along the town’s historical tour. If you would like more info, go here. It is also within walking distance to the vibrant shops and restaurants in downtown Salado.
