Why Visit the Kreische Brewery & Momument Hill State Historic Sites?
Located on a bluff along the Colorado River, the Kreische family home and brewery ruins are a beautiful place to explore and take in some history. This land purchased by Kreische also included Monument Hill, a tomb of 52 men, some of whom died during the infamous “black bean incident” occurring during the Republic of Texas era.

- Kreische Family Home
- Brewery Ruins
- Nature Trail
- Picnic Grounds
Visitor Center
The visitor center is where you will pay admission and pick up a map of the historic site. It also has a small museum and gift shop.
Tomb and Monument Hill
The Monument Hill tomb holds the remains of 52 Texas men who died during the Dawson and Mier Expeditions. A monument was erected in 1936 to honor the men.
Kreische Family Home
Heinrich Kreische was a master stonemason. He used his skills to build a 3-story home for his wife and six children.
Nature Trails
Enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery in Texas as you stroll along the bluff and then make your way downward to the brewery ruins. Kreische used spring water from the ravine below his house and started a successful brewery serving the local community. He would raise the Frisch Auf! (Freshen Up!) flag when a new batch of beer was ready and citizens would flock to his beer garden.
Picnic Area
Pack a lunch and enjoy the peaceful serenity of the grounds.
Tips for Visitors:
- Plan for the weather. During the warmer months, walk down to the brewery ruins first (in the early hours of the day) because there isn’t much airflow, then explore the higher grounds where there is usually a nice breeze. On the very hottest days of summer, they will cancel the afternoon tours.
