Make Book Month Magical this Year
October has arrived and with it, all things spooky, scary, or Autumn cozy. But did you know that October is also book month? To celebrate, we have compiled a list of ideas to help get kids excited about reading this season.
1. Pair a good book with a favorite beverage.
Simple but effective. Sometimes all you need is a cup of hot cocoa, apple cider, or herbal tea to get into the spirit of the season.
2. Join a reading challenge
Reading challenges can be a fun and motivating way to keep kids interested in literature. Sweeten the fun by offering prizes for completed challenges and reading logs. Like the one pictured here? Grab the freebie below.
3. Create a reading nook.
Reading nooks are all about an inviting atmosphere. They can be as simple as a comfy chair next to the window or a pillow fort and a flashlight.
4. Build or visit a Little Free Library.
This is a great way for kids to pass along books they are no longer using and find something new to read. Visit the Little Free Library website here for more information.
5. Host a Book Swap.
This is a fun get-together for kids to exchange books. Bring five books, and leave with five different books.
6. Write a book.
This can be a smaller endeavor like a comic book or a book of poems. Or, kids can use October to begin outlining ideas for a lengthier story.
7. Cosplay a book character.
October is the perfect month for kids to get into character with a costume.
8. Visit a library or bookstore.
Not only are libraries and bookstores great places to pick up books, but many also offer storytimes, events, and classes. Additionally, librarians and local booksellers can make recommendations and help kids with book selections.
9. Make Halloween or Fall bookmarks.
October is a great month to read a scary story or a cozy mystery. Break out the craft supplies and get creative designing the perfect bookmark for the season.
10. Join in.
Read with your kids! Listen to an audiobook together, take turns reading aloud, or grab your book and sit together while you read.
