What Can You Expect to See and Do at the Sam Houston Museum Museum?

The museum complex is situated on 15 acres of the Houston family’s homestead. Browse museum exhibits and see some original structures as you explore the grounds. Visitors can schedule a guided tour or peruse on their own.

View Museum Exhibits at The Rotunda and the Walker Education Center

At The Rotunda, you can explore a variety of exhibits that cover important events such as the Republic of Texas, the Mexican War, and the Civil War, along with artifacts from Sam Houston’s life. The Walker Education Center features rotating exhibits.

Explore the Complex Grounds to See Historical Structures, Gardens, and a Pond

See Sam Houston’s residences at the Woodland Home and Steamboat House. The Houston Family’s Woodland Home was built by Sam and his wife, Margaret, and is still located on the original site. The Steamboat House is where Sam lived later in life after they returned to Huntsville in 1862. Sam Houston passed away in this home and a room has been preserved to represent this event.

Other buildings include log cabin homes, Sam Houston’s Law office, Eliza’s Kitchen, Raven’s Pottery Shed, and Joshua’s Blacksmith Forge.

Tips for Visitors:

  • *Park, pay admission, and grab a museum map at the Sam Houston Memorial Museum (1836 Sam Houston Avenue) or the Katy & E. Don Walker, Sr. Education Center (1402 19th Street.) You can also do this at the Wigwam Neosho Museum Store (located in the center of the Museum Grounds, next to the Steamboat House) but parking is limited.
