What Can You Expect to See & Do at the Bat Flight Location?

Entry

Frio Cave is located on a private ranch. The tour guide will meet you at the gate at the time of your booking. You will follow a gravel road for 2 miles to a parking area. Here they will have you sign your waiver. Then you’ll walk uphill a short way to the bat viewing area.

Bat Flight Viewing Area

The viewing area is carved out of the natural terrain into a tiered stadium-seating style. You are also free to roam around. They have the protected area around the cave roped off.

Frio Cave

The first thing you will probably notice is that you can hear (and smell) them!

They typically emerge in waves for about 3 hours. The first group began their flight almost as soon as we arrived.

Over ten million bats are said to ascend from this cave. To say it was an incredible experience would be an understatement.

The very knowledge (and friendly) tour guide will tell you about the bats and answer any questions you have.

Tips for Visitors

  • There is a relatively steep, paved hill from the parking area to the bat cave viewing area. They have accessibility available if someone in your group needs to be driven up the hill.
  •  You are asked to refrain from loud noises and flash photography so as not to inhibit the bats.
  • You are free to leave when you are ready. Some very young children were becoming restless due to the late time of day and the waiting between the groups of bats. The tour officially ends at dusk.
